The Benefits of Submitting Your Competitors in the DemandJump Platform
When you first sign up or log into DemandJump, you will be prompted to enter your priority keywords and competitors. It might seem overwhelming to provide all this information at once, but this is an important step in getting the most out of the DemandJump platform. You can read more about tracking keywords here. Once you have entered this information, you can return to the DemandJump Settings to edit them at any time.
Your competitor information is used in several places, but mainly you’ll notice it in the “Competitor Rankings” dashboard. This is where you can go to see how you and your competitors are performing for the top keywords in a specific insight report. Using the Sidebar Menu, click on Research & Discovery, then select Competitor Rankings from the dropdown menu.
Why Is It Important To Enter Competitors?
When you enter your competitors, you are essentially creating a way to compare your SEO success to those in your same industry. Without this comparison, you won’t have a good idea of how you’re doing—and seeing where your competitors are outranking you (or where no one is ranking) shows exactly what content to write.
For example, imagine you are one of the top five banks and you want to rank for keywords about “checking accounts.” In order to know if you’re succeeding, you would enter your top competitors (explore our pricing page to learn how many competitors each package can enter) and look at how your position in the search compares to those you’ve entered.
Take a look at this screenshot below. Here we have two major banks, JP Morgan and Citibank. You can see that neither of these banks are currently ranking for the top four keywords that have been identified in the “checking account” insight report. If you are JP Morgan, this is a great opportunity to write content using those keywords in order to capture that traffic.
Keep in mind that this dashboard represents a moment in time. You’ll need to keep monitoring this dashboard to see how your rankings shift and identify where you’re winning and losing ground. Based on the movement here, you can develop strong content strategies to cover the keywords with the highest priority.
Who Are My Competitors?
There are two different types of competitors, direct and indirect. Direct competitors are businesses that offer the same (or very similar) products or services as your business. To be an accurate comparison, select those that are around the same size as your business and have similar objectives. These are the businesses that you want to beat in the rankings!
Indirect competitors may compete for the same audience or in a related market as you, but they may be bigger or smaller, or have slightly different offerings.
For example, the direct competitors for Starbucks would be companies like Dunkin' Donuts or Caribou Coffee. Starbucks’ indirect competitors could include companies like McDonald's, 7-Eleven, or Folgers. These are all different sizes and in different markets, however, they still compete for the same audience—people who want a cup of coffee.
Based on your plan, we recommend a general ratio of one indirect competitor for every three direct competitors.
How Do I Update Or Add Competitors to My DemandJump Account?
To add competitors to your account, follow these simple steps:
Click on Settings in DemandJump and select Competitors.
This will take you to a screen where you can enter your competitors. Or, if you are signing up for the first time, simply add competitors during your initial set up process.
It’s important to note that you must be an admin to add competitors. Additionally, you must add the domain (for example, “starbucks.com” rather than just “Starbucks”). Do not include things like"https" or "www" or any unique pages (for example, “starbucks.com/menu/drinks/hot-coffees”).
Your competitor data will be available in the platform in about 24 hours. You can update or change your competitors at any time. If you want to add additional competitors, you may need to upgrade your package to access that ability.
